Bucket Fill Factor
ISO / SAE calculates with a perfect horizontal position of the bucket. The buckets mounted on loaders will lean forward in carry position , with the angle varying depending upon the manufacturers type.
When selecting a bucket remember that
- Choose your bucket in accordance to the wheel loaders rated capacity and consider
- The material,
- The density of the material ( see our material density check sheet )
- The actual transported volume
- Some manufacturer wheel loaders with different Linkage systems will give a larger heap than the same size competitor wheel loader in the same material


Rock
The bucket fill factor in rock is close to 100%

Aggregate
The bucket fill factor in aggregate ( crushed material ) is 100%

Sand & Gravel
The bucket fill factor in sand and gravel is close to 105%

Clay and Earth
The bucket fill factor in clay and earth is close to 110%
Bucket Selection Chart
The choice of bucket is determined by the density of the material and the expected bucket fill factor.
The actual bucket volume is often larger than the rated capacity, depending on the material being transported. Other considerations include
- Open bucket design
- Roll back performance in all positions
- The bucket fill performance
Bucket Selection Sand & Gravel Example
- Fill Factor ~ 105%
- Density 1.65 t/m3 – 2695 lb/yd3
- For a bucket with capacity 3.1m3 – 4.1yd3 bucket carries 3.3m3 – 4.3yd3
- For a bucket with capacity 3.3m3 – 4.3yd3 bucket carries 3.5m3 – 4.6yd3

Bucket Selection
As well as loading capacity there are other factors to consider . For example the size of rock buckets is optimised for optimal penetration and filling capability rather than the density of the material.
